Graves under water in Pinckneyville
Pinckneyville-area residents whose loved ones are buried at city cemetery near the fairgrounds are expected to return to Monday's city council meeting to ask about the promised remedy to three acres of flooding on the east end of the cemetery. Monday morning, an industrial pump was placed on the northeast corner of the cemetery to begin pumping tens of thousands of gallons of flood waters out of the cemetery. Dozens of markers were completely covered by water. The soft lawns are causing some markers to lean. The problem has gotten worse over time and residents on the other side of the railroad to the north say draining the cemetery will cause flooding at their homes. An engineer has been studying the problem since complaints were first aired at a March council meeting.
