Friday's Prep Baseball: Mt. Vernon slams Du Quoin
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[With at least one hit from everyone in the lineup, the Rams' offense exploded for a 17-5 win at Du Quoin on Friday.
In winning its third consecutive game, Mt. Vernon tallied 20 hits and had five players with three hits apiece in improving to 6-3 on the season. Du Quoin is also 6-3 and begins defense of its River-to-River Conference, Mississippi Division title at home against Sparta Monday.
Saturday's Pepsi/Mid-America Classic was postponed after heavy early morning rains.
Mt. Vernon broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the third inning against Du Quoin starter Kyle Kelley (0-1).
The Rams flew ahead 7-0 in their half of the fourth.
The Indians scored a run in their half of the fourth, but Mt. Vernon tacked on two more in the top of the fifth before tallying eight runs in the sixth inning.
Kegan Robbins stroked an RBI single for the Tribe.
The Rams tallied six hits and had six RBIs in their half of the sixth to pull ahead 17-1. Du Quoin scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth with RBI from Jake Stanhouse and Trent Bigham.
JC Davis and Bigham each had two hits with Drew Bennett, Sam Kuhnert, Seth Baxter, Sam Gossett and Andrew Riley (double) all notching safeties.
