Du Quoin State Fair Reforestation Project Is Being Undertaken
Du Quoin State Fair grounds superintendent Jeff Mason has tackled a very impressive program to reforest much of the grounds with 100 new trees over the next six months.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture recently accepted a low bid from the large Wandell's Nursery of Urbana, Ill. to purchase the trees.
The plantings this fall will include 50 genetically disease resistant elms and 25 hackberry trees. Next spring, another 25 red and white oak trees will be planted. The nursery says spring is a better time to plant oaks.
The reforestation helps remedy huge losses from storms during the past three years.
The trees are large with 3 1/2 to 4 1/2-inch trunks.
