BASEBALL: Sun Dawgs hand Pinckneyville-Du Quoin legion 4-2 loss

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[In what will be their final tune-up before the Senior American Legion 25th District tournament begins this weekend, Pinckneyville-Du Quoin dropped a 4-2 decision to the S.I. Sun Dawgs on Wednesday at Rigdon Field after stranding eight men on base - five of those in scoring position.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Posts 2504 & 647 got on the board when Marian Brammeier and Adam Barczewski crossed the plate following an error by the Sun Dawgs.

Up 2-1 in the sixth, Pinckneyville-Du Quoin missed a golden opportunity to tack on after Evan Chapman singled to start the inning and went to third on a double by Bryant Shute. Nate Boss grounded to third with one out, drawing a throw to the plate that put Chapman into a rundown. With runners at the corners and two down, Brandon George was left at the plate when Boss was gunned down attempting to steal second base.

The Sun Dawgs tied the game in the next half-inning, but not as quickly as they originally thought. Bryce Mathis (Elkville) drove a ball to deep right that bounced just in front of the fence in fair territory and over. After originally being called a home run, Mathis was soon returned back to second base. He didn't stay long, scoring on an error just moments later to tie the score at 2-2.

Two hits and two sacrifices in the eighth put the Sun Dawgs up 4-2, and Pinckneyville-Du Quoin couldn't take advantage of a Boss double in the ninth.

Boss (2-4, 2B), Shute (1-4, 2B), George (1-3, BB), Brammeier (1-3, R), Chapman (1-3), Brett Warchol (1-3) and C.J. Opp (1-2, BB) had hits for 2504/647.

Mathis finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Sun Dawgs.
