BASEBALL: Pinckneyville-Du Quoin overcomes slow start against Herrin
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Pinckneyville-Du Quoin Posts 2504 & 647 fell behind early but got a couple of key hits in the middle innings to push past Herrin 4-1 in Senior American Legion action on Tuesday night at Rigdon Field.
Bryant Shute surrendered just three hits in his six innings of work on the mound for P-DQ to pick up the win with Brandon George nailing down the save in the seventh.
Daniel Allen reached on an error to start the game for Herrin and came in on a one-out double by Cody Crosley for a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Herrin Post 645 starter Gabe Jelly held Pinckneyville-Du Quoin hitless through three innings, but got himself into a jam in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff walk to George. Brett Warchol and Nate Boss followed with singles, and C.J. Opp added an RBI on a fielder's choice later in the inning to make it 3-1 in favor of Pinckneyville-Du Quoin.
Boss added his second RBI of the day in the fifth, singling home George who had been hit by a pitch.
After giving up a hit in each of the first three innings, Shute clamped down on Post 645 for the next three innings allowing just a hit batsmen before exiting up 4-1.
Boss (2-3, BB, 2 RBI) and Warchol (3-4, 2 2B, R) led the way for P-DQ with multi-hit efforts at the plate. Shute (1-4) and Travis Chapman (1-3) also had hits.
For Herrin, Crosley (1-4, 2B, RBI), Baily Schimpf (1-4), Jared Daugherty (1-2, HBP) and Brandon Ryker (1-2) hit safely.
Pinckneyville-Du Quoin hosts Dowell on Wednesday and Murphysboro on Thursday, both starting at 6:00 p.m.
