BASEBALL: Six-run sixth carries 2504/647 over Marion
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Pinckneyville-Du Quoin plated six runs in the sixth inning to break open a tie ballgame, going on to top Marion Post 147 8-2 in Senior American Legion baseball action on Tuesday evening at Rigdon Field.
Posts 2504 & 647 were playing with just nine available players, and each one had at least one hit in the fifteen-hit onslaught for the home team.
Pinckneyville-Du Quoin starter Brandon George struggled out of the gate, walking Marion lead-off man Cody Smith in front of singles by Kyle Mitchell and Kurt Dixon. George then walked in a run by giving Dylan Arvai a free pass, but would settle in and retire the next three batters without suffering further damage.
Adam Barczewski singled to lead off the bottom of the first for P-DQ, stole second, then came in on C.J. Opp's base hit to tie it. Zach Phillips singled to lead off the bottom of the second before scoring on an error, giving 2504/647 a 2-1 lead.
George allowed just one hit over the next three innings before exiting with six strikeouts. Brett Warchol came in for the top of the fifth when Marion's Kyle Mitchell doubled, went to third on a single by Dixon, then scored on a grounder to second by Arvai to make it 2-2.
Barzcewski and Opp both singled with no outs in Pinckneyville-Du Quoin's sixth, setting the table for a three-run bomb to left by George. Marian Brammeier later doubled to score two, and Phillips added an RBI single to pad the lead.
Opp picked up the win with two scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh allowing one hit and striking out three.
George (2-4, R, 3 RBI, HR), Barczewski (2-5, 2 R), Opp (2-2, R, RBI, BB), Warchol (1-3, BB), Brammeier (1-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB), Phillips (2-4, R, RBI), Kyle Mueller (3-4, 2B), Travis Chapman (1-4, R) and Evan Chapman (1-4, R, 2B) all had hits for 2504/647.
For Marion, Mitchell (3-4, R, 2B) and Dixon (3-4, 2B) accounted for all six hits while Arvai (0-2, BB, 2 RBI) drove in both runs.
Pinckneyville-Du Quoin's senior team hosts Chester on Thursday.
