SWIMMING: 'Summer Splash' packs Du Quoin Pool
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Six local swimmers won at least one event at this past Saturday's Indian Summer Splash Invitational at the Du Quoin Municipal Pool, and Pinckneyville's Karsen Konkel swept his way through all four of his races in the 6-and-under division while Indians Olivia Cravens, Jerry Kuhnert and Caseton Luthy each won three times in the mixed format.
Konkel remains unbeaten this season, also winning the backstroke and freestyle events at Thursday's home meet for the Dolphins against Millstadt. He broke pool records in both races, completing the 25y backstroke in 42.21 and the 25y freestyle in 33.44. Both times shaved over eight seconds off the previously held marks.
On Saturday Konkel won on all four strokes, joining teammates Ian Henne (mixed 14 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle) and Savannah Cheek (mixed-12 50m breaststroke) as winners from Pinckneyville. Henne set two pool records against Millstadt on Thursday in those same two events (45.89; 1:05.19). Cheek also set a new mark in the butterfly on Thursday with a time of 50.40.
For the Indians, Cravens broke a pair of team records in the 11-12 50m freestyle (30.40) and the 50m butterfly (33.54), bettering 1992 times set by Caryn Parrish. Cravens also won in the 50m backstroke and was second in the 50m breaststroke on Saturday.
Kuhnert brought home wins in the mixed-16 butterfly, freestyle and breaststroke while Luthy was the victor in mixed-18 butterfly, freestyle and backstroke.
Du Quoin's Aaron Korbar was third in the mixed-12 50m butterfly, but his time was good enough to set the Indians' team record at 36.17 (38.11, Trevor Jones, 2009).
The Dolphins are at Carlyle on Tuesday before hosting Red Bud on Thursday, the same day the Swimming Indians travel to Mt. Vernon for a meet.
