Du Quoin, Sesser School Superintendents Help Rehabilitate Homeless Shelter

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[A group of Southern Illinois school superintendents and administrators were in Mt. Vernon Monday to work on a homeless shelter as part of a service day project. The superintendents will be painting the inside walls and ceilings of one of the wings of the shelter at 1717 Jefferson Street in Mt. Vernon.

"School superintendents are also typically very active members of their communities," said Gary Kelly, superintendent of DuQuoin District No. 300 and past president of the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA). "Volunteerism and service to the community is something we think is important for our students and we think this service day is a good way to lead by example."

Several active and retired superintendents from the Egyptian Region of the IASA have signed up to participate. The Egyptian Region is one of 21 regions in the IASA, the statewide association that represents school superintendents and other school administrators.

The list of those signed up to participate includes: Dwain Baldridge, superintendent of Rome District No. 2, Tyler Brown, assistant superintendent of Mt. Vernon District No. 80, Kim Byars, special education director of the Franklin-Jefferson Special Education District, Mike Garlinghouse, retired school administrator. Chris Grant, superintendent of Thompsonville District No. 174, Mike Green, superintendent of Mt. Vernon District No. 80. Don Haile, superintendent of New Hope District No. 6, Jason Henry, former Du Quoin teacher and now superintendent of Sesser-Valier District No. 196 and member of the IASA Board of Directors, and his wife Kerri Henry, Shlonda Horton, superintendent of Waltonville District No. 1, Gary Kelly, superintendent of DuQuoin District No. 300 and past president of IASA, and his wife Deana Kelly, John Metzger, retired superintendent of Akin, Brent O'Daniell, superintendent of Nashville District No. 49, and president of the Egyptian Region of the IASA, Nick Osborne, retired superintendent at Mt. Vernon and the Southern Field Services Director for IASA. Kevin Settle, retired superintendent of Mt. Vernon, and his wife Cheryl Settle, retired assistant regional superintendent of schools.
