BASEBALL: Red Bud beats Panthers 10-6
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The baseball Panthers continued to struggle to string wins together on Wednesday, falling to Red Bud 10-6 as mistakes in the field led to one big inning for the Musketeers in the second, and walks led to another later in the fifth.
Pinckneyville started strong, as Luke Miller singled with one out in the bottom of the first, then Bryant Shute doubled him in for a 1-0 lead. C.J. Opp singled to bring in Shute, then Opp scored when Evan Chapman reached on an error to make it 3-0 Panthers.
Two errors contributed to a three-run second for the Musketeers, however, and Red Bud would score in five straight innings in pulling away for the victory.
Pinckneyville led briefly after three, taking advantage of an error by the shortstop to allow Chapman to give PCHS a 5-4 edge with a two-out double in the bottom of the third. Noah Hepp and Hunter Queen both doubled in the fourth the for the Panthers other run, which also gave Pinckneyville a short-lived lead at 6-5 before the Musketeers put it away in the fifth with three walks, a triple and a two-run homer.
Opp got the start for the Panthers and went four innings, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Justin Bumann got two outs in the fifth, giving up four earned runs on one hit and three walks. Nolan Luke got the third out of the inning before Shute (2.0 ip, 2 h, 0 er, 3 k) took over the rest of the way.
Hepp (2-3, 2B, R), Queen (2-4, 2B, RBI), Miller (1-4, R), Shute (1-2, 2B, BB, 2 R, RBI), Opp (1-3, RBI), and Chapman (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI) each hit safely for the Panthers.
Pinckneyville (8-11) hosts Murphysboro on Thursday before traveling to Nashville on Friday and Carmi on Saturday.
