SOFTBALL: DHS claims Indoor Tournament crown
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The road to the championship for the DuQuoin Softball Indians went through Carmi, Carbondale, and Herrin on Saturday in the first Indoor Softball Tournament at the Southern Illinois Center. DuQuoin won the tournament final over Herrin 12-2 in six innings, beat Carbondale 7-0 to get there, and started the day defeating Carmi 9-2 in a nine-inning game. The Indians now have a 10-0 record.
The first game against Carmi tested the Indians greatly. The score was 2-2 after eight innings. The Indians broke the game open in the ninth inning scoring 7 runs and winning 9-2.
The winning pitcher for the Indians was Alexis Kohrs. Kohrs pitched all nine innings allowing two earned runs, 5 hits, had 13 strikeouts, and 2 walks.
DuQuoin had 9 total hits in the contest. Jessica Hirsch was 3-5 with an RBI. Kelsey Robinson was 1-4 with a home run, and 3 RBI. Kohrs was 2-4 with a home run and 2 RBI. Magen Edwards was 2-3. Cassidy Rice was 1-4.
DuQuoin next faced Carbondale and won that game 7-0. Rice was the winning pitcher for DuQuoin going all 7 innings. Rice (5-0) pitched a shutout allowing only 3 hits with 8 strikeouts and no walks.
DuQuoin pounded out 12 hits in the contest including 2 home runs. Hirsch was 1-4 with a double, Aubrey Davis was 2-4, Robinson was 3-4 including her sixteenth career home run with 4 RBI, Kohrs was 1-4, Hadley Marek was 1-4, Edwards was 2-3, Cassidy Hill was 1-3 with a home run and an RBI, and Rice was 1-4.
DuQuoin then moved the championship game against Herrin. The game was tied 2-2 through the first four innings until DuQuoin started hitting. DuQuoin scored four runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth to put the game away at 12-2.
The winning pitcher for DuQuoin was Kohrs (now 5-0). Kohrs allowed two earned runs, had 8 strikeouts, one walk, and one hit batter in the game.
DuQuoin had 8 total hits in the contest. Davis was 1-4, Robinson was 1-4 with an RBI, Rice was 2-2 with a home run and 2 RBI, Kohrs was 1-4 with 2 RBI, Marek was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Edwards was 1-4 with an RBI and Hailey Stewart was 1-4 with an RBI.
Coach Jason James was quite excited about the winning the tournament. "I am very proud of the girls today--how they continued to work all day long, giving their best. I thought both pitchers (Rice and Kohrs) pitched outstanding. Our defense played very well, and the bats came to life. I thought a lot of kids stepped up in big situations to get hits. We got the job done." Coach James is assisted by Jacob Emling and Lonnie James.
Those fans that attended the tournament saw a very well organized group of volunteers putting in some very long hours. This tournament was a credit to DuQuoin High School, and there are many volunteers that should thanked for their efforts.

DuQuoin plays at Benton on Monday (4:30). Thursday, March 29, there is a home game with Agape. Saturday, March 31, DuQuoin travels to Mulberry Grove for two games.
<u>DHS crushes Centralia 10-2</u>
The weather outside may have been frightful on Friday, but playing softball indoors was definitely delightful. The DuQuoin High School Softball Team sponsored an indoor tournament at the Fairgrounds Southern Illinois Center on Friday evening with eight teams participating. This is the first time that an indoor tournament has been held for DHS.
At 4:00 on Field 1, the Carmi Bulldogs defeated the Herrin Tigers 11-8. The Benton Rangerettes defeated the Agape Knights on Field 2 with a score of 16-0. DuQuoin played the Centralia Orphan Annies and won 10-2 on Field 1 at 6:00. The other 6:00 game was Carbondale vs. Johnston City. The Carbondale Terriers won over the JC Indians 12-8.
Rice was the winning pitcher for DuQuoin. She allowed two earned runs on 4 hits, had 12 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 2 hit batters.
The big hit for Centralia was a home run with one on by Shaelyn Lawson in the third inning. Rachel Teckstein had a double in the seventh inning for Centralia, and Bekah Brooks and Erin Earl each had a single for Centralia's four hits. The losing pitcher was Jessica Feig. She was relieved by Montana Howell in the second inning. Centralia has six errors in the contest, while DuQuoin committed one error.
DuQuoin had 8 hits in the game. Hirsch was 1-2 with a double plus a walk and hit by a pitch, Davis was 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base, Robinson (RF) had two walks and an RBI, Rice (P) was 2-4 with an RBI, Katrina Whitley (courtesy runner) scored 3 times, Kohrs (3B) was 2-3 with a home run and 2 RBI and Stewart was 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
Coach Jason James thought "Rice pitched a good game. Again, I was pleased with the way we swung the bats. We have to continue to do that to be successful. And our defense is starting to come around as well."
