</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The DuQuoin high school softball team got off to a great start on Saturday beating Marissa twice. The two games were held at Marissa with DuQuoin taking the first game 4-0 and the second 6-4. DuQuoin's record is now 2-0 on the young season.

Coach Jason James thought that Cassidy Rice "pitched a wonderful game" in the first game. "She really had every pitch working! We had some kids come up with some timely hits (Edwards had an RBI triple). The only disappointment was that we left 9 runners in scoring position. We have to take advantage of every opportunity we get, and this is something that we will improve on as the season continues."

Jessica Hirsch (shortstop) was 1-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Aubrey Davis (second base) was 2-4. Cassidy Rice (pitcher) was 0-2 with an RBI. Alexis Kohrs (third base) was 1-3. Magen Edwards (left field) had a big game at the bat going 2-3 with an RBI triple. Amanda Williams (DP) had a walk and scored a run. Jessy Wallace (catcher) was 1-3.

Others seeing playing time were Kelsey Robinson, Hadley Marek, and Cassidy Hill was the flex. DuQuoin had 7 hits in the game, while Marissa had 1. Marissa committed five errors in the game, and DuQuoin had none.

Rice pitched a one hit shut out. Rice walked no one and had 16 strikeouts in the game. Her record is 1-0.

The second game had DuQuoin winning 6-4. Alexis Kohrs was the winning pitcher allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits, 18 strikeouts, 6 walks, and one hit batter. Her record is also 1-0.

Jessica Hirsch (third base) was 1-4. Kelsey Robinson (right field) had a big game going 4-4 at bat with an RBI. Cassidy Rice (center field) was 1-3. Alexis Kohrs (pitcher) was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI. Hadley Marek (first base) was 1-4 with 2 RBI. Magen Edwards (left field) was 1-4 with 2 RBI. Hailey Stewart (second base) was 2-4. Katrina Whitley (catcher) was 1-2. Aubrey Davis also saw action at shortstop. DuQuoin pounded out 13 hits in this game with one error on defense. Marissa had two errors in the contest.

Coach James commented, "Kohrs in her DuQuoin debut threw very well! I think she was a little nervous at first, playing for a new team, but she doesn't have to impress us. We know she is very good and dominate. Marek and Edwards came up with two out, 2 RBI base hits to help us pick up the victory. Edwards big hit came in the 7th to help us get the lead. We had a rough 4th inning that let Marissa back into the game, but we kept our composure and pulled it out. Again, we left to many base runners, and just did not put them away early."

"Our pitching today was very impressive with Rice and Kohrs combining for 34 strikeouts. They will both keep us in the game. Once we start rattling the bats on a consistent basis, we will be very dangerous!"

Other team members are Kate Toler, Abby Myers, Bailie Caldwell, Emily Asbury, Chelsea Huff, Marisa Ferguson, and Amanda Atteberry. The Assistant Coaches are Jacob Emling and Lonnie James.

DuQuoin has a full schedule this week. Monday will be at Mt. Vernon, Tuesday at Goreville, Wednesday is a home game with West Frankfort, and Friday and Saturday there will be an indoor tournament in DuQuoin.
