BASKETBALL: DHS girls can't keep up with Hornettes
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Nashville Hornettes totally dominated the DuQuoin Indians on Thursday evening in a Girls Basketball contest held at DuQuoin High School. The final score was 43-19, which was somewhat better than the first time DuQuoin played the Hornettes at Nashville. DuQuoin lost by 43 points in that game.
Nashville was ahead 11-4 at the end of the first quarter, and 26-7 at the half. DuQuoin could only score 2 points in the third quarter, and was down 34-9. DuQuoin actually outscored Nashville 10-9 in the final quarter as both coaches tried to get some substitutes in the game.
Prior to the start of the Varsity game, two Senior players were honored. Jessica Hirsch is the daughter of Denise and Shannon Hirsch. Shelby Presley is the daughter of Chasity and Alex Cruz. Both Seniors were presented gifts and flowers and honored by their teammates.
This game was the last regular season game and home game for the Indians. The Indians start Regional play on Monday in the Herrin Regional, and are seeded #4. DuQuoin's record is 22-7 overall and 7-3 in the Conference. Two of those conference losses are to Nashville, and the third is to Pinckneyville.
The Hornettes finish the season as Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Mississippi Division Champions at 10-0.
Alexis Kohrs and Jessica Hirsch both scored 6 points for the Indians. Rebekah Maddox had 5 points, and Bailie Caldwell 2. Abby Myers, Cassidy Rice, Taylor King, Carissa Graham, Jacqueline Harsy, Morgan Dennis, and Shelby Presley all saw action for the Indians. Kelsey Robinson is out injured at the moment, but the good news is that it is not as serious as thought.
The leading scorer for Nashville was Shawn Rennegarbe with 12 points. Keesha Setzekorn had 9 points, Shaye Harre 8, Erica Brown 5, Jolie Wall 5, Jordi Harre 2, and Hannah Yung 2.
Coach Shawn File was filled with emotion as he talked about his two Seniors and the game. "We talked about playing hard, and we played hard for 32 minutes tonight. I will go to battle with this team any time or any place."
"I am so proud of our two Senior players. Jessica Hirsch has been a leader for us the past four years. She is a phenomenal basketball player. Shelby Presley does things that are not always noticed; she makes the rebounds and battles hard. As good as they are at basketball, they are also good people. I love being associated with them."
"As far as the game is concerned, Nashville shot the lights out tonight. They seemed to hit everything they shot. Our shots were going in and then out, and just did not fall. We now have to get ready for the Regional next week."
Not only were the two Seniors honored, but the DHS Band played. Tunes included the School Song and National Anthem. The Band is directed by Denise Smith. In addition, there were "male" cheerleaders supporting the Indians. Jackson's Pools and Spas also sponsored a drawing for $100 to a fan at the game. All of these festivities added to the atmosphere of the evening, but there was disappointment in the loss the Indians suffered.
The Junior Varsity, coached by Jason James, faired much better against Nashville than they did the first time. The final score was 35-18 in Nashville's favor. This was the last game for the JV. Their final record ends at 4-12 overall and 3-7 in the Conference.
Only four JV players scored in the game. Bailie Caldwell had 6 points as did Carissa Graham. Abby Myers had 3 points as did Jacqueline Harsy. Coach James got all of his players in the game including Lela Spiller, Amanda Atteberry, Morgan Dennis, Ashanti Warren, and Shelby Simmons.
The Indians have been assigned to the Herrin Regional and begin play on Monday, February 6, against Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher at 7:30. The three point shootout time is 6:53. Herrin is the Number One seed in the regional followed by Sesser-Valier, Benton, DuQuoin, Z-R-C, West Frankfort, and Johnston City. DuQuoin did defeat Z-R-C earlier in the regular season.
