The host wasted no time letting their opponents know that they are serious about winning their own tournament. DuQuoin played Elverado in the first game of the evening and overwhelmed the Falcons 51-8.
DuQuoin's Jessica Hirsch scored the first ten points of the game to lead the Indians to a 10-0 score within the first five minutes. At the end of the first quarter, DuQuoin was leading 21-4, and at the half it was 32-7. The third quarter had DuQuoin ahead by 48-7. Since DuQuoin was ahead by forty points, the clock ran continuously in the fourth quarter. The final score ended at 51-8. Coach Shawn File was able to play all nine of his players in the contest.
Rebekah Maddox led DuQuoin's scorers with 18. Maddox had an impressive night under the basket. Jessica Hirsch followed with 15 points including 3-three pointers. Hirsch was also very impressive with her passing game and her unselfish attitude. Alexis Kohrs also had 3-three pointers for 9 points. Cassidy Rice had 4 points, Taylor King 3, and Abby Myers 2. Bailie Caldwell, Kelsey Robinson, and Shelby Presley also saw action for the Indians. This was the first game of the season for the Indians, who are 1-0.
Coach Shawn File thought it was a good opening game for the Indians. "We really have been focused on defense. We did a lot of diving for the ball and flying around. We did a good job of backing each other up. We were fairly patient, and hit whoever was open at the time. If we continue to take opportune shots, we will do well. We did a good job of following our game plan, and executed it well."
Scoring for Elverado were Hannah Rawson with 3 points, Meghann Trammel 2, Allecia Cross 2, and Paige Newfarmer 1. Others seeing playing time were Rebecca Korando, Kelsey Leland, Corine Wilson, and Lacey Qualls. Elverado's record is 0-1.
Elverado Coach Lance Bedar commented "we had too many turnovers (31) and not enough shots (21). DuQuoin is a quicker team that we are. We have to learn from this, and come back on Thursday and play hard."
DuQuoin plays on Thursday evening in the second game of the evening (7:00) against Johnston City. Elverado plays the third game at 8:30 against Murphysboro.
