VOLLEYBALL: DMS squeaks by PCHS at "Pink-Out"

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[It is never boring when DuQuoin and Pinckneyville play any sport. On Thursday evening, the sport was volleyball at Pinckneyville High School. Both games ended with the exact same score as DuQuoin managed to squeak by the Panthers by just four total points. The two games were 28-26 in DuQuoin&#39;s favor, giving the Indians the match 2-0.

Pinckneyville led game one 4-2 when Shannon Nehrkorn put down a big spike, then DuQuoin&#39;s Rebekah Maddox did the same. Keawna Anders spiked to bring the score to 5-4 Panthers. Pinckneyville&#39;s tip was good, and Haley Simpson&#39;s serve hit the net, but went in. DuQuoin was called for a lift to make the score 8-4 Pinckneyville. Pinckneyville was called for four hits. DuQuoin&#39;s spike was in, bringing the score to 8-6. Pinckneyville was called for four hits, and then spiked into the net to tie the score at 8.

DuQuoin&#39;s serve was long, and then DuQuoin spiked into the net to put Pinckneyville up 10-8. Pinckneyville was called for a net violation to put the Indians up 10-9. DuQuoin served long, but Jessica Hirsch&#39;s spike could not be returned by the Panthers. Maddox&#39;s spike tied the score at 11. Pinckneyville took the lead again with a spike, but DuQuoin did the same to tie the score at 12. Pinckneyville was called for a lift. Time out was called with DuQuoin winning 13-12.

After the time out, Maddox pounded a spike down to put DuQuoin up by two. Maddox followed that with a block to go up three. DuQuoin spiked off the block and scored. Pinckneyville spiked into the middle to score (16-13 DuQuoin). Pinckneyville spiked, and the Indians could not return it. Megi Jones&#39; tip was good, and then DuQuoin was called for a lift. Rebekah Maddox spiked, but was blocked. The Panthers were called for a net violation, and then spiked over the DuQuoin block. Pinckneyville&#39;s serve was an ace, and the score was 18-18.

A DuQuoin missed hit gave Pinckneyville the lead. Pinckneyville blocked a DuQuoin spike, and then DuQuoin hit out. The score was 21-18 Pinckneyville. Keawna Anders&#39; spike was good. An Alexis Kohrs serve was not handled by the Panthers, and a Pinckneyville spike could not be handled by DuQuoin. Anders scored on a spike to score. A spike by DuQuoin&#39;s Jessica Hirsch was good to tie the score at 22 each.

Hirsch again spiked good to put DuQuoin up. Cassidy Rice scored for the Indians. DuQuoin hit a ball out, and Pinckneyville scored again to tie the score at 23 each. Pinckneyville scored on a ball in the net from DuQuoin and a missed shot to go up 25-24. Hirsch&#39;s hit brought it to 25-25. DuQuoin was called for a blocking violation, and Maddox spiked one down. Pinckneyville could not handle a Megi Jones serve, and Hirsch spiked over a double block to score and end the game at 28-26 DuQuoin.

Game two was the same type of game--going back and forth with the score. At 26-26, DuQuoin&#39;s Maddox blocked Pinckneyville to score, and Cassidy Rice spiked to win the game. DuQuoin&#39;s record is 12-9. Pinckneyville is 3-12.

This was a "Pink" game for cancer awareness. Pinckneyville should be commended for raising over $1200 for the cause. Six hundred dollars will be donated to the Susan B. Kohman Foundation, while the other $600 is being donated to a PHS teacher, who has been stricken with cancer.

Shannon Nehrkorn and Haley Simpson led Pinckneyville with six kills each. Simpson also had three blocks and two ace serves. Lindsey Winter had four digs and seven assists. Coach Katie Shaneyfelt commented: "We are coming out of a slump, and now we are starting to play some very good, competitive ball. Now we have to learn to finish, and pull together."

Megi Jones led DuQuoin at the serving line with 8 points. Jones also led in assists. Maddox got credit for 5 blocks with Rice having 3. Rice also led in digs with 4. Jessica Hirsch and Rebekah Maddox led in kills with 6 each.

Coach Jane Tuthill was excited about the win and her team&#39;s performance. "I think in the first game the serves made a difference, and the attacks at the net. We cannot back off the net, and play scared. I think our coverage was not good in the first game, and we made some adjustments that helped. The team is showing more character when they play, and there is more support for each other on the floor. There is less negativity."

The Jr. Varsity match was won in three games by DuQuoin. Pinckneyville won the first game at 25-20. DuQuoin took the second game 25-18, and also won the third game at 15-8. DuQuoin&#39;s JV are 8-1.

The Freshmen match was won by DuQuoin in two games. The scores were 25-15 and 25-21. The DuQuoin Freshmen are 3-3.

DuQuoin&#39;s Freshmen play in the Pinckneyville Tournament on Saturday. The next regular match for DuQuoin is on Tuesday at home with Nashville.

Pinckneyville hosts Red Bud on Monday.
