VOLLEYBALL: Carterville foils DHS comeback

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Carterville Lions Volleyball Team came to DuQuoin on Tuesday evening and outperformed the Indians in two very close games. Carterville won the match 2-0 with game scores of 25-16 and 25-23. The Indians made a valiant effort to comeback in the second game, but just could not stop Carterville&#39;s big hitters.

Carterville started off quickly in the first game and scored first. DuQuoin&#39;s Rebekah Maddox spiked one off a Carterville player and returned the serve to DuQuoin. DuQuoin was called for a net violation to put Carterville up 3-2. A good Carterville serve made it 4-2. Carterville served one out and spiked a ball out to create a tie at 4-4. Carterville&#39;s big hitters went to work and moved the score to 7-4 Carterville. Cassidy Rice scored for DuQuoin on a spike. A Carterville miscue made it 7-6, and DuQuoin&#39;s Michaela Brown put a spike down to tie the score at 7-7.

Again, DuQuoin was called for a net violation, and then Carterville did the same. Carterville blocked a DuQuoin hit, and Maddox for DuQuoin did the same. The score was tied at 10-10. Carterville moved ahead by two, then hit the ball out. DuQuoin was called for a net violation, and the score was 13-11 Carterville. DuQuoin called a time out with Carterville leading 17-14. After the time out, DuQuoin spiked out of bounds twice. DuQuoin hit one off the ceiling and could not control the ball. Carterville went ahead 20-14. A Keawna Anders spike was bumped into the ceiling by Carterville. DuQuoin was in the net at 21-15. DuQuoin could not control the serve and Carterville scored again. A Jessica Hirsch spike followed and Carterville hit the return out. An ace serve by Carterville scored and a very large spike ended the game at 25-16 Carterville. DuQuoin was called for five net violations in this game.

The second game proved much better for the Indians. The game went back and forth between the Indians and Lions until the very end. Carterville won a duel at the net to go up 1-0. Maddox blocked a Carterville spike to tie it up. Carterville spiked over a double block to move ahead. Carterville was called for a net violation. DuQuoin managed to tie the score at 3-3. Carterville tried a quick set, but the ball went out. Carterville blocked a DuQuoin spike to go up 5-4. A Carterville jump serve could not be returned by DuQuoin, and DuQuoin spiked out. Carterville was up 8-4. Carterville missed a hit into the net, and Anders&#39; spike went down to make it 8-6 Carterville. The score moved back and forth between the two teams. DuQuoin tied it up at 11-11.

Brown&#39;s spike off the block for DuQuoin allowed them to move a head at 12-11. DuQuoin was called for a net violation, and there was a 12-12 tie. Maddox put down a big spike, and Carterville missed a hit for DuQuoin to go up 14-12. DuQuoin moved ahead 17-13 and then 19-16, and 21-16. DuQuoin was still leading at 23-18. Carterville got a lucky hit off the net to score, then put down a big spike to bring the score to 23-22 DuQuoin. Carterville scored on a quick set, and a tip to tie the score at 23-23. Carterville closed out the game with two very large spikes. The final score was Carterville 25-23 over DuQuoin.

DuQuoin&#39;s Jessica Martin had one service ace. Rebekah Maddox have 3 blocks and Cassidy Rice 1. Jessica Hirsch led in digs with six. Rice, Anders, and Maddox all had three kills. Jessie Martin led in assists with 19 and Megi Jones had 18.

Coach Jane Tuthill was obviously disappointed in the loss. "Basically, in the first game unforced errors killed us. We cannot do that with a good team. We cannot be backing off at the net and playing scared. The second game we tipped too much, and again made too many errors. We weren&#39;t covering in the right spot, and we let the ball fall. Tonight was not our best performance. We have played much better."

DuQuoin&#39;s Varsity record is now 11-9 on the season. The Jr. Varsity won their match 2-0. The game scores were 25-17 and 25-20. The Jr. Varsity record is 7-1. The Freshmen also won their match 2-0. Game scores were 25-13 and 25-15. The Freshman are 2-3. The Freshman and JV Coach is Sara Geiger.

DuQuoin travels to Pinckneyville on Thursday for a "Pink Game."
