BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: Benton spoils home openers for DMS

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The DuQuoin Middle School softball team started out well scoring four runs in the first inning against Benton on Monday. That lead only held up one inning as Benton scored five runs in the second to take and keep the lead.

DuQuoin had too many walks and too many errors in the game, losing 11-5. Their record is now 1-2.

DuQuoin&#39;s starting pitcher, Jordyn Bullar, went six innings allowing 11 runs (7 earned), 7 hits, had 8 walks, 4 strikeouts, and a wild pitch. Her record is 1-1. Bullar&#39;s effort was hampered by DuQuoin&#39;s 5 defensive errors.

Benton played stellar defense committing no errors in the contest. Benton&#39;s winning pitcher was Hunter, who went all seven innings. Hunter allowed 5 runs, all earned, 5 hits, had 7 walks, 4 strikeouts, one hit batter, and 3 wild pitches.

DuQuoin&#39;s hitting was as follows: Sydney Lewis was 1-4. Hannah Marek for 1-3. Jordyn Bullar was 1-3 with a double. Nikki Ridgeway was 1-3 with an RBI. Harley Dearmond was 1- 4 with an RBI. Timbra Mansfield had an RBI. Others seeing action were: Brittany Clark, Alaina Caldwell, Andrea Morgan, and Kat Robison.

Coach Jason James commented that, "we started off well at the plate scoring four runs in the first inning. We had a rough second inning. Benton made the plays on defense, and we didn&#39;t. We will have to work hard to get better."

DuQuoin Middle School travels to Chester on Thursday.

<u>DMS boys beaten by Benton</u>

The DuQuoin Middle School Baseball Team took a hard loss at home on Monday. Benton defeated DuQuoin 13-1 in five innings. This loss makes DuQuoin&#39;s record 1-2.

DuQuoin&#39;s lone run was scored in the fourth inning. DuQuoin had only four hits in the contest. Cole Hopkins was 1-2. Brock Bullar was 2-2. Jordan Edwards was 1-1 and Luke Metten was 1-1.

Braden Lee was the losing pitcher going 2 1/3 innings. His record is 0-1. Edwards pitched for two outs in the third inning. Hank Stewart finished up going two innings. Stewart gave up only two runs and had four strikeouts.

DuQuoin travels to Chester on Thursday.
