SWIMMING: Indians win 2011 SISL Championship
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Defending their title from last season, the Du Quoin Swimming Indians repeated as Southern Illinois Swim League champions this past Saturday in Marion, edging second place Salem by 26 points (475-449) while Paxton Higgerson (boys 9-10) and Olivia Cravens (girls 9-10) each took home High Point honors for their age group.
Seven Swimming Indians team records also were broken or improved on Saturday.
Cody Bailey improved a pair of his team records in the boys 13-14 division, finishing the 50m butterfly in 30.77 seconds (improving on 31.51) and the 100m freestyle in 1:01.18 (1:01.72). Bailey won the butterfly and was second in the freestyle.
Jacob Harsy improved his record in the 50m freestyle for boys 7-8 to 42.28, trimming almost two seconds off of his old mark of 44.16. Harsy won the 25m freestyle race and finished second in two others (50m freestyle, 25m breaststroke) to fall just four points shy of Salem's Haddon Lybarger for High Point honors.
Higgerson, who won the boys 9-10 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke and 100m individual medley, set a new Du Quoin record in the 25m freestyle with a time of 15.97, bettering Chris Elder's 1990 mark of 16.32.
The girls 9-10 100m freestyle (Lauren Cravens, Rachel Gomes, Maddison Dorsey, O. Cravens), 100m medley (Gomes, O. Cravens, L. Cravens, Josie Bailey) and 11-12 200m freestyle (Haley Kuhnert, Alexandria Gossman, Emily Beutow, Quinn Kirkpatrick) relay teams also set or improved team records.
O. Cravens was the only female swimmer to win an individual event at Marion on Saturday, taking home first in the girls 9-10 25m freestyle, 25m butterfly and 100m IM. On the boys' side, Trevor Jones (boys 13-14 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke), Nicholas King (boys 11-12 50m freestyle) and Caseton Luthy (boys 15-18 100m breaststroke) joined Higgerson, Harsy and C. Bailey as winners.
Seven Du Quoin relay squads also won at the SISL Championships including the girls 9-10 100m freestyle, 11-12 200m freestyle, 13-14 200m medley (Michelle VanZandt, Courtney Rudloff, Madeleine Cravens, Victoria Cavitt), boys 7-8 100m medley (David Gomes, Harsy, Tyler VanZandt, Trae Horn) and 100m freestyle (T. VanZandt, Horn, Gomes, Harsy), 9-10 100m medley (Shamar Adams, Higgerson, Joshua Heape, Jacob Green), and 13-14 200m medley (William Galik, Matthew Galik, Jones, Caleb Gomes).
The meet was called after 78 of the 82 events due to rain moving into the area.
The top six finishers in each event at the SISL Championships qualify for the All-Star meet in Millstadt this Saturday, August 6. A complete list of those Swimming Indians who placed top six appears on page 7 of Monday's Du Quoin Evening Call.
