</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[DuQuoin High School Softball is on a roll, moving their record to 5-0. The latest foe to fall was Goreville on Monday. DuQuoin and Goreville both played very well in a tightly contested game. It was a pitching duel between Cassidy Rice (DuQuoin) and two Goreville pitchers, Brittany Pritchett and Jodie Wright for much of the game, but DuQuoin prevailed winning the game 2-1.
DuQuoin's Cassidy Rice pitched a one hitter going all seven innings. Rice had a no hitter until the sixth inning when Alison Webb hit a blooper into left field for a hit that was misplayed and that allowed a run to score. The run was unearned. Rice had one run on one hit, five strikeouts, and 4 walks. The two Goreville pitchers each pitched 3 innings. Pritchett, the starter, allowed two runs, both earned, three hits, three strikeouts and two walks. The reliever, Jodie Wright, pitched 3 innings allowing no runs, no hits, two strikeouts, and two walks. DuQuoin had two errors while Goreville had only one error.
DuQuoin scored two runs in the third inning. Jessy Wallace walked with one out followed by a Kelsey Toler hit. With runners on first and second, Jessica Hirsch hit a triple scoring both runners for two RBI. Hirsch was sent home, but was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Those two RBI's by Hirsch were the winning runs allowing DuQuoin to win 2-1 over Goreville. Jessica Hirsch, Kelsey Toler, and Kelsey Robinson had the only hits of the game. Toler was 1-2, Hirsch was 1-2 with 2 RBI, and Robinson was 1-2.
Hadley Marek, Cassidy Rice, Magen Edwards, Katrina Whitley, Ashley Ward, Jessy Wallace, and Curry Emling also had playing time for the Indians.
Jason James was pleased with the performance of his team. "We played very well. The pitching was great, and we had good defense. We got a really timely big hit from Jessica Hirsch to score two runs. The 5-0 start is a great start-- the best we have had since I have been coaching softball. We are playing really well."
DuQuoin travels to West Frankfort on Wednesday to play both a Varsity and full JV games.
