DEBIT CARD PHONE SCAM ALERT
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[ A computer automated phone scam has impacted customers of Buena Vista National Bank and other Southern Illinois Bank customers. Customers are receiving automated telephone calls (typically to their cell phones) stating their debit card or Visa account has been deactivated. The customer is asked to reset their information in order to re-activate their account.
Here's how the scam works: The telephone rings and the caller ID shows "not available" or "private number". An automated recording states that your debit card account has been deactivated. You need to reset your account by following these steps. The automated recording states to press "1" to begin - this is when the scam starts. The next step - enter the sixteen digit card number and the expiration date. Next, they will ask for the three digit Customer Verification Value Code (CVV Code) located on the back of the card, followed by the four digit PIN number. If this information is entered when prompted, the caller will now have all of the information they need to fraudulently access your debit card account.
It is important to remember not to give out personal and/or financial information over the phone including passwords or PIN numbers. Banks do not use an automated system to ask for customer information regarding their accounts. Banks already have your account information; therefore they do not need to ask you for your information over the phone.
