DMS boys score big win over Murphy
By Patricia Ferrari
for the Du Quoin Evening Call
The eighth grade Boys Basketball Team came to the gym to play and play hard on Thursday evening. The results were a "big win" over Murphysboro 54-43. Coach Ryan Heape was very pleased with his team's performance. "We had a better effort. We talked before the ball game about playing with heart and intensity. We have to play hard for four quarters, and on every possession." And they did!
At the end of the first quarter, DuQuoin was ahead 15-14. DuQuoin pulled away slightly in the second quarter going up 27-21. The third quarter had DuQuoin winning 43-32, and in the fourth quarter Murphysboro pulled to within eight points, but that was as close as they could get. The final score was 54-43.
The leading scorer for DMS was A.J. Smith with 22 points. Jared Thomas was close behind with 19 points. Jacob Wright had 5 points, Jacob Hunziker 4, Noah Campbell 3, and Nolan Showalter 1. DuQuoin's record is 9-6 overall and 6-4 in the Conference. Coach Heape added, "we played a hard game. We still have a long way to go to win a regional. Tonight was a good start. I was pleased; it was a we effort rather than an I effort. We were able to play a lot of kids early in the game and often. I am happy for the kids to bounce back. It is a good win."
The seventh grade team started out very cold--scoring no points in the first quarter and only two points in the second quarter. Murphysboro was ahead 22-2 at the half. The third quarter had Murphysboro leading 31-10, and the final score was 37-19. Their record is now 4-11.
