As an honor to the memory of late Chester school board members and CHS sports booster and broadcaster, Dick Roth, Chester Community Unit School District #139 Board of Education established the Dick Roth Memorial CHS All Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
Much as the halls of fame that are popular in college and professional sports, the CHS All Sports Hall of Fame seeks to honor the outstanding student-athletes who have given the students and fans of Chester High School many exciting and memorable moments over the years.
This year's inductee group will consist of former CHS athletes and the possibility of at least one team who performed at CHS from the beginning of CHS interscholastic sports through the 2000-2001 season. Inductees will be honored at a special banquet given in their honor in the fall of 2011.
The Hall of Fame is located in the Colbert Gym foyer/cafeteria along the entire north wall. Each individual inductee will be permanently honored there with a picture and a special plaque that recognizes his/her years in school and sports in which he/she participated. Similar arrangements will be made for the team that could be inducted as well.
The selection and induction process is being supervised by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, a group of five local individuals who have volunteers their time and work to make the Hall of Fame a truly first-class operation.
Well, how does the selection process work? Each Committee member will research and come up with a list of potential inductees to present to the group. Each member will be prepared to present the "case" for each of their nominees and their nominated team.
If you think that you have an ex-CHS athlete who has been out of high school for at least ten (10) years and who deserves to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, please submit a nominating packet for the Committee's consideration. Although the Committee reserves the right to induct persons who may not necessarily be nominated through this process, it is still important for interested people in the community to write these nominating letters.
To be a qualified applicant for the Hall of Fame, the proposed person who, while a student-athlete at CHS, displayed exemplary abilities and qualities in athletic competition and leadership. The successful inductee will be able to demonstrate that he/she gave positive contributions to the school and to the sports program during his/her career. It must be understood that only former CHS student athletes may be considered for induction.
Here's the process for nominating a person or team for the Hall of Fame. 1) Write a letter that describes your nominee and/or team's accomplishments at CHS and why they deserve to be honored. 2) Submit any supporting evidence (newspaper clippings, photocopies of a yearbook page, copies of awards or honors, etc). 3) Mail this packet to Chester High School, 1901 Swanwick Street, Chester, IL, 62233 and mark it to the attention of CHS Athletic Director Mike Coffey.
Deadline for nominating letters is March 1, 2011.
