BASKETBALL: DMS girls advance, DMS boys crush Chester
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The DuQuoin Middle School Girls Basketball Team played Murphysboro in the first round of their regional on Wednesday evening and came home a winner. The Regional is being played at Trico. DMS won the game against Murphysboro 21-19.
DuQuoin was behind to Murphysboro at the end of the first quarter 7-5. DMS came on in the second quarter to tie the score at half-time. Both teams scored 13 points.
DuQuoin took the lead 17-16 at the end of the third quarter, and with 1:21 remaining in the game, Marisa Ferguson knocked down two clutch free throws to put DMS on top 21-18. MMS added a free throw and had a chance to tie after a timeout with 5.3 seconds to go, but the DuQuoin defense forced a difficult shot that was well off line.
DuQuoin's record is now 12-9 overall. DuQuoin moves into the finals of the regional against the winner of the second game--either Trico or Chester.
Marisa Ferguson was the leading scorer for DuQuoin with 7 points. Carissa Graham, Jessica Harsy, and Jacqueline Harsy each had 4 points followed by Amanda Atteberry with 2 points. Murphysboro was led by Amy Rafael with 8 points.
Coach Debbie Ritter was quite excited about the win. She commented that "it was a close game throughout. We hit some very needed free throws at key times. The girls played great on defense. I am very proud to be in the regional championship."
DuQuoin takes on either Trico or Chester at 2:00 on Saturday, January 15, for the regional championship. The game will be played at Trico.

<u>DMS BOYS WIN OVER CHESTER</u>
The DuQuoin Middle School Boys Basketball Team traveled to Chester on Wednesday evening to play a game rescheduled from December because of bad weather. Both the eighth grade and seventh grade teams were victorious over Chester. The eighth graders won big with a 62-29 score. The seventh grade also won handily; the score was 43-23.
DMS eighth graders now have a record of 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the Conference. DuQuoin led all the way in this game. At the end of the first quarter DuQuoin was in control 15-8 and at the half 37-15. The third quarter had DuQuoin up 58-20, and the final score was 62-29.
The leading scorer for DuQuoin was A.J. Smith with 12 points. Jacob Wright scored 11 points,
Lane Valier 9, Jacob Valier 7, Jared Thomas 7, Tucker Kuhnert 4, Jordan Carson 4, Nolan Showalter 3, Jacob Hunziker 2, Jerry Kuhnert 2, and Noah Campbell 2.
Coach Ryan Heape "gave credit to Chester's kids because they played hard and didn't quit. We are doing things right, and we are hitting our shots." Coach Heape was hopeful that this would continue for Thursday's game with Murphysboro.
The seventh graders, coached by Jacob Emling, also won. The final score was 43-23. Cole Hopkins was the leading scorer with 11 points followed by Tucker Kuhnert with 10, Hunter Behm 8, Ryne O'Rourke 7, Braden Heape 5, and Luke Metten 2. Their overall record is 4-10. There was also a sixth grade game prior to the seventh, and the two teams played to a 26-26 tie. DuQuoin was down by 9 points at the half and managed to tie the score at the end of the game.
DMS plays at home on Thursday, January 13, with Murphysboro.
