It was the last day of the season and according to him his last hunt for elk. Although conditions were worse this trip than ever before,( tempertures apon arriving were 18 degress below and on the day of, warmed up to a toasty 15 degree, not including wind chill factor) his determination pushed him on. Oscar and his son, Chris, were hunting outside Cameron, Montana and with help from the locals they were able to find the elk. The elk herd had come down from the high mountains to escape the deep snow. Oscar located a cow elk and as he started to track her, he jumped up the bull elk. When he got in range he took a shot with his 30/06 using 180 grain corelock bullets. He continued to track it for over a half mile, finally when in range again, success! The Dept of Conservation of Montana estimated the 5 by 5 bull elk at around 5 years of age. It was about 900 pounds field dressed and 18 feet long from nose to back hoofs streched out. Due to the blizzard like condition, traveling home took about 35 hours instead of the 22 hours it was suppose to take. Having to drive no more than 35 mph for over 300 miles and having to push thru 4 foot snow drifts on the roads. Oscar has no doubt it was all worth it. He arrived home to a very proud family!
