The DMS girls basketball team (eighth grade) lost a nail-biter to Murphysboro Thursday evening by one point, 24-23.
DuQuoin led at the end of the first quarter 7-3, at the half 16-14, but lost the lead in the third quarter. Murphysboro led 18-17 at the third quarter mark.
Marisa Ferguson had a season high of 11 points followed by Jacqueline Harsy with 8, Carissa Graham 2, and Amanda Atteberry 2. DuQuoin was 7 for 23 at the free throw line.
DMS is now 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Coach Debbie Ritter felt her team "lost on free throws, only shooting about 30%. The girls played very well as a team. Marisa Ferguson had a season high of 11 points due to her hustle down the court for the fast breaks."
"Carissa Graham also shut down the girl she was guarding on defense once again. We lost a starter for nearly all of the second half due to injury and without her lost a bit of our spark, but there were girls that stepped up for her and did a good job."
The seventh grade also was a close one. DMS lost 25-23. The seventh grade is now 3-4 overall.
Scoring was as follows: Brittany Clark 6, Andrea Morgan 6, Kat Robison 4, Sydney Lewis 4, Emily Born 2, and Alaina Caldwell 1.
Coach Chuck Montgomery commented, "it was a tough game to lose. The girls showed a lot of heart; we just need to improve some of the mental mistakes."
DMS travels to Sparta on Monday to play a 5:30 game.
