Chester dominates Carmi in Friday night football
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Visiting Chester intercepted two passes, recovered two fumbles and held the Black Diamond Conference's leading rusher to under 100 yards Friday in a 36-0 blanking of Carmi-White County.
Bryan Lee's Yellow Jackets (2-0) allowed the Bulldogs (0-2) just four first downs and 118 yards of total offense, and had over a nine-minute edge in time of possession.
CWC senior Logan Rogers, the school's all-time leading rusher who gained over 200 yards in Week 1 at Johnston City, was limited to 79 yards on 17 carries by the Chester defense. It was just the second time in the past two years that Rogers has been held under 100 yards.
"We have a pretty young defense, so we were a little bit worried last week," said Lee after the game. "Four of our front five had never started a varsity game before last week. We had a little bit of trouble in the first half, played a better second half, then had a good week of practice, so we felt like we were going to do what we needed to do tonight. They did a nice job.
"Logan is one heck of an athlete. I can see where he doesn't get stopped very often, so we feel fortunate we were able to contain him and do the things we were hoping to do."
The Yellow Jackets scored on the second play from scrimmage en route to building a 15-0 halftime lead. It was 29-0 by the end of three.
"Early in the game, I thought we were playing OK defensively," said Bulldog coach Kurt Simon. "But other than that first quarter, I believe we got whipped in every phase of the game. We made mistakes, we turned the ball over, we got shoved around. Individually, we just got whipped across the board.
"They were just a better football team than us tonight. They were more physical and it showed."
Senior John Baughman intercepted a Ryan Farr pass and took it back 35 yards for a touchdown to give the visitors a 6-0 lead less than a minute into the game.
Baughman also recovered a fumble later in the game (as did sophomore Austen Barnhart), and senior Justin Woodward picked off a Farr screen pass deep in CWC territory early in the fourth quarter.
"Credit our coaching staff with film study there," said Lee. "That first interception was complete blind luck. John Baughman's a good athlete and was in the right place. But on the second interception, we'd seen that screen on film so our defensive end Woodward did a great job of sniffing it out and waiting for it to happen."
Even when they weren't forcing turnovers, the Yellow Jackets were taking advantage of other Bulldog mistakes on offense.
On the first play of the second quarter, CWC, attempting to punt from deep in its own territory, snapped the ball out of bounds through the end zone for a safety.
Later in the period, Chester sophomore Stephen Roth capped a four-play, 65-yard scoring drive with a one-yard TD run.
Roth and sophomore Zane Wallace each scored on five-yard runs in the third, and Baughman capped off the scoring with a 13-yard TD run early in the fourth.
Roth finished with 88 yards, Wallace 62 and junior Clint Cole 52 for Chester, which out-gained the 'Dogs 220-100 on the ground.
The Yellow Jackets' senior quarterback, Zach Lochhead, was an efficient 1-for-3, completing a 64-yard pass to Cole which helped set up Roth's second TD.
After Baughman's interception, CWC had a pair of first downs on its second drive of the game, but didn't have another until the fourth quarter (when Chester was already up big and starting to substitute).
The Bulldogs have lost their first two games of the season for just the second time in Simon's highly successful tenure at the school.
In other Diamond games Friday, Eldorado improved to 2-0 with a 30-0 win over Elverado, Johnston City also went to 2-0 with a 36-8 win over Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton and Sesser-Valier knocked off Hamilton County 20-6.
Saturday's scheduled game between Fairfield and Vienna at Vienna was postponed due to a traffic accident Friday night involving four Mules players. The game will be made up at 4 today, and the Mules have moved their home game against Eldorado scheduled for Friday night to Saturday evening instead.
Chester will host 0-2 CZR Friday, while CWC will travel to 1-1 Hamilton County.
