SAR honors teachers, students
The Lewis and Clark Chapter of the Illinois Society of Sons of the American Revolution recently presented a number of awards and recognitions during its recent meeting.
Outstanding Citizenship Awards were given to students from 21 high schools in the chapter's six-county service region. Local winners include Zachary Zappa of Chester, Sydney Cometto of Coulterville, Cian Chetham of Marissa, Mackenzie Harbaugh of Red Bud, and Grace Knop of Steeleville.
The organization also recognized three outstanding high school history teachers, including Tammy Hannah of Cahokia, Greg Rushing of Coulterville and Robert Hawley of Valmeyer.
The chapter presented certificates to 16 individuals and couples who fly the United States Flag daily and prominently. Local recipients include Willis and Marilyn Gerlach, Richard and Brenda Montroy and Randy and Angie Truluck, all of Schuline/Sparta.
The Sons of the American Revolution is a national organization with state societies and local chapters. Its purposes are patriotic, historical and educational.
Counties served by the Lewis & Clark chapter are St. Clair, Monroe, Randolph, Washington, Clinton and Jefferson.
