Assistant Chief of Police Jamie Ellermeyer says Rex Lowe was staying at a homeless shelter called "Good Samaritan" in Carbondale after fleeing Du Quoin, knowing there was a warrant out for his arrest.

It was simply a case of "no jobs and no money" says Ellermeyer. The clerk at Marathon believed Lowe had a gun, but Lowe says he didn't. Lowe told police he took $361 from the Marathon.

It was a strawberry vendor Johnathon Wright at the Skate Zone who remembered the numbers on a license plate of a Kia Spectra Lowe had borrowed when he fled the scene. He remembered most of the numbers at the outset and all seven numbers after a night's sleep.

Low was arrested in Carbondale after a One Stop clerk in Carbondale felt Lowe was going to rob him and called police. Police told the clerk to call "911" if Lowe returned. He did. Police made the arrest and he has been returned to the Perry County Jail facing a charge of aggravated robbery, a Class I felony.
