Sparta wins two
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Sparta Lady Bulldogs picked up two easy wins in high school softball action last week. Wednesday's game saw them defeat New Athens by a score of 7-2. New Athens got off to a quick start with two runs in the top of the first but Sparta rallied with one in the bottom of the first, three in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Taylor Martin was the top hitter for the Lady Bulldogs with a home run and two singles in three at-bats. Julian Sroka had two hits, Jamie Woodworth had a double and Shanell Roberts added an RBI single. Sroka was also the winning pitcher for Sparta. She went five innings and Alexis Kohrs worked two innings of relief. Combined, they held New Athens to only three hits.
In their next game Sparta quickly took out Murphysboro by a score of 11-0 in five innings. The Lady Bulldogs scored in every inning but put things completely out of reach with four runs in the third and four more in the fourth.
Sparta's offensive attack included a double and a single from Kohrs, two singles from Woodworth and one hit apiece from Sroka, Martin and Taylor Craig. Kohrs was the winning pitcher for Sparta. Valleroy also pitched against Murphysboro, who could manage only one hit in the game.
