2010 fine arts festival offers spring music, art events
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Fine art lovers rejoice! Southwestern Illinois College is hosting the 2010 Fine Arts Festival this spring. Check out the lineup of great events to be held at the Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave:
The Gateway Brass Quintet - 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, Main Complex First Floor Lounge:
The group is made up of talented freelance musicians who perform in and around St. Louis. Members of the quintet perform frequently with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Opera Theatre, the Union Avenue Opera Theater, the Fox Theater Orchestra and the St. Louis Municipal Opera (MUNY) Orchestra, as well as many other area musical organizations.
SWIC Student Film Screening - 7 p.m., Friday, April 9, Main Complex Theatre:
SWIC film students will present original short movies and music videos.
Vocalist Sascha Duran - 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, Main Complex Theatre:
Duran is a current SWIC music student.
"Wordstock" - 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, Schmidt Art Center:
SWIC Assistant Professors of English Steve Moiles and Matt McCarter will give a presentation of short stories.
SWIC Student Art Show - Thursday, April 15 through Thursday, April 29, Schmidt Art Center:
The opening reception for this exhibit will take place from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 15, with the awards presentation at 7 p.m.
SWIC Music Student Recital - 3-4 p.m., Wednesday, April 21, Schmidt Art Center:
SWIC music students will perform prepared pieces.
"Space Monster-rama" - 7 p.m., Thursday, April 22, Schmidt Art Center:
Written by Bill Chessman, SWIC Voice Acting Class students will perform this science fiction phenomenon in the style of 1950's radio shows.
Guest pianist Soyeon Kim - 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, Main Complex Theatre:
Kim, an area resident and faculty member at McKendree University, will perform a solo recital.
Nuclear Percussion Ensemble - 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, Main Complex Theatre:
St. Louis' own cutting-edge world drumming group will perform innovative beats.
SWIC Guitar Ensemble - 7 p.m., Thursday, April 29, Main Complex Theatre:
Listen to the sounds of the SWIC Guitar Ensemble as they perform.
"Four Voices" - 7 p.m., Thursday, April 29, Schmidt Art Center:
SWIC English faculty members Tess Farnham, Melody Gee, Wayne Lanter and Treasure Williams will give a poetry reading.
Honors Recital - 3 p.m., Sunday, May 2, Main Complex Theatre
SWIC music students will share what they have learned. Both vocal and instrumental performances are scheduled.
Concert and Chamber Choir - 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, Main Complex Theatre:
This performance will feature a multi-media medley of songs from Mozart to Broadway to Africa, complete with dancers and videos.
Concert Band - 7 p.m., Thursday, May 6, Main Complex Theatre
Enjoy the sounds of the SWIC Concert Band.
Jazz Band and Jazz Improv Class Concert 7 p.m., Monday, May 10, Main Complex Theatre:
SWIC music students will put their spin on jazz classics.
