CHS Boys Track and Field are runners-up in first meet of 2010
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Chester High School hosted their first Track and Field Meet of the season Tuesday March 30 at the CHS Track and Field Complex. Weather was great with the temperature at 68 degrees and it was a sunny and breezy with dry conditions.
The Jackets were runners-up to Vienna who edged them out by only 15-points, 186-171. Gibault came in third (33), and Red Bud was fourth (30). Steeleville (5) and Vienne (1) closed out the competition.
Chester dominated the field events with five-of-six victories. The Jackets won the Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump and Pole Vault and placed second in the Triple Jump.
Brad Bindle was the winner of the Discus with his throw of 118-8 while Wesley Cowan finished 6th with a throw of 98-6. Wesley Cowan turned it around in the Shot Put and won with a toss of 45-11. Bindel placed 5th (38-9).
Dan Adams won the Long Jump with a leap of 18-1 while Chester's Josh Louveau placed finished 3rd with his 16-7 effort. Freshman Kyle Landon was the winner of the High Jump with a jump of 6-0. Chad Koenegstein, who has never high-jumped before, was the runner-up with a nice leap of 5-8.
Zach Sternberg won the Pole Vault with a vault of 8-0 and Dan Adams was runner-up in the Triple Jump with his 35-5 effort. The Yellow Jackets led, 75-61 following completion of the field events.
CHS was also strong in the running events winning five-of-12 events on the track. Thee boys won the 3200-Meter Relay, 110-Meter Hurdles, 400-Meter dash, 1600-Meter Run and the 1600-Meter Relay.
Chester's 1600-Meter Relay was the winner with a time of 3:58.3 and the 3200-Meter Relay won with a time of 9:58.7. Other track victories came from individuals as Chad Koenegstein, Justin Woodward and Devin Valleroy earned titles in three events.
Chad Koenegstein won the 110-Meter Hurdles with his 15.5 effort. Justin Woodward won the 400-Meter dash with a time of 58.8. In that same event, Tyler Chandler finished 3rd (1:00.1).
Freshman Devin Valleroy was the winner in the 1600-Meter Run with his time of 5:20.7 and another freshman, Zach Sternberg, finished 5th with a time of 5:43.6. Steeleville's Hamilton placed 6th (5:47.5).
Senior Brant McMillan placed 4th in the 3200-Meter Run with his 12:20.5 performance. In the 100-Meter dash the Jackets had two runners place. John Baughman was runner-up to Vienna's Hall. Hall won with a time of 11.8 and Baughman was right behind with a time of 12.0. Matt Hamilton finished 3rd with his time of 12.2.
The 800-Meter Run was won by Vienna's Dunn who turned in a time of 2:18.1. Freshman Link Cushman of CHS placed 4th (2:26.4) and Blake Nanney finished 5th (2:26.5). It was a photo finish.
Brant McMillan was the 3rd-place finisher in the 300-Meter Hurdles with his time of 57.3. The winning time was 42.2 by D. Kramp of Vienna. Two more freshmen placed in the 200-Meter Dash. Travis Chandler placed 3rd with a time of 27.5 and Brent Knop finished 5th (28.2).
The Yellow Jackets did not have anyone enter in two events, the 400-Meter Relay and the 800-Meter Relay. Points lost in those two events could have made the difference in the final outcome.
Overall, however, Coaches Mike Coffey and Bob Koenegstein were satisfied with the performances of their track and field athletes in the first competition of the 2010 season.
