SWIC herstory celebrations continue through March
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[With two weeks of 10th anniversary events under its belt, the SWIC Herstory Committee dives into week three of its monthlong celebration with Wellness and Advocacy Fairs. The Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, Memorial Hospital/ Breast Health, St. Clair County Health Department/ Smoking Cessation Program, First Call for Help, St. Elizabeth's Hospital/ Bone Density and Cardiovascular Health, Bethany Place/ AIDS Awareness, Tapestry of Community Offerings and Family Empowerment will all be on hand to exchange information with the SWIC community.
The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, March 22 at the Granite City Campus, 4950 Maryville Road; Tuesday, March 23 at the East St. Louis Campus, 601 James R. Thompson Blvd.; Thursday, March 25 at the Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave., in the First Floor Hall and Lounge; and Thursday, March 25 at the Red Bud Campus, 500 W. South Fourth St., in the Lobby and First Floor Hallway.
Off Sides, a film followed by a discussion with Sister Yasmeen of St. Louis, will be shown from 3-5:50 p.m., Wednesday, March 24 in the Belleville Campus Liberal Arts Building, Room 2124, 2500 Carlyle Ave. The film by Director Jafar Panahi, follows a group of Iranian women caught attempting to enter Tehran's Azadi Stadium dressed as boys to watch a football match. Sister Yasmeen's discussion will focus on women in Islam and women in the Middle East.
At 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, Aunia Kahn, an internationally exhibited and published artist, and domestic abuse survivor, will talk about how healing has worked for her, as well as her daily routine to meet the challenges of remaining healthy in mind, body and spirit. The program will be held in the Belleville Campus Liberal Arts Building, Room 2216, 2500 Carlyle Ave.
Also scheduled Tuesday, March 30 is SWIC Women Film Makers. From 12:30-3:20 p.m. in the Belleville Campus Main Complex First Floor Lounge, you can view and discuss films created by SWIC students.
A Slam & Jam will conclude Herstory 2010 events Wednesday, March 31. The event runs from 7-9:50 p.m. in the Belleville Campus First Floor Lounge, 2500 Carlyle Ave. Activities include a celebration of music and poetry in an open-mic setting with unique performances by SWIC instructors, students, and local musicians and poets.
