CGS music students compete at 2010 IGSMA District Solo and Ensemble Contest

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Chester Grade School vocal and instrumental students competed at the 2010 Illinois Grade School Music Association District 3W Solo and Ensemble Contest Saturday February 27 at Unity Point School in Carbondale, Illinois. All Chester students performed well and brought home a total of 34 top ratings and seven 2nd place ratings.

First Place ratings were earned by the following people for Instrumental Solos: Bethany Williamson, B-Flat Clarinet solo titled, "Pepperino"; Brook Wahl, Bass Clarinet solo, "Running the Bass Line"; Katie Roth, Flute solo, "Elf Dance"; Derek Mott, Baritone solo, "Theme from Symphony No. 1 and Madison Conner, B-Flat Clarinet, "Concerto in Eb".

Other Instrumental Solos earning 1st Place ratings included: Stephanie Roth, B-Flat Clarinet, "Star of the East"; Alex Westbrook, B-Flat Clarinet, "Star of the East; Daulton Stahlheber, Trumpet, "Mumbo Jumbo"; Madison Wofford, B-Flat Clarinet, "Alman" and Lindsey McCormick, B-Flat Clarinet, "Slavonic Dance".

More Instrumental 1st Place Solos included: Cherokee Kingery, B-Flat Clarinet, "Star of the East"; Bayleigh Hahn, B-Flat Clarinet, "Alman"; Olivia Moore, Flute, "Minuet in G"; Sam Butz, Flute, "March for Flutists"; Kaitlyn Brown, Flute, "Holiday on Ice"; Christian Gray, Trumpet, "Drum Major" and Sarah Bindel, Trumpet, "Call of the Sea".

There were still more Instrumental 1st Place solos which include: Ashley Wegener, B-Flat Clarinet, "Beauty and Joy"; Andrew Friess, Trumpet, "Drum Major"; Devon Tudor, Trombone, "Caissons Go Rolling Along"; Austin Runge, Trombone, "Fandango"; Peyton Lee, Snare Drum, "Yankee Doodle Fantasy" and Garrett Hoffman, Snare Drum, "Marine's Hymn".

There were four Instrumental 2nd Place ratings including Autumn Phillips, B-Flat Clarinet, "Polish Dance; Amber Carnahan, B-Flat Clarinet, "Dancing Shoes"; Ashley Butz, Trumpet, "Danish Dance" and Chase McCarty, E-Flat Saxophone, "In the Mood".

Finally there were three Instrumental Ensembles, all of which earned 1st Place ratings including Heins, et al, Trumpet Ensemble; Friess, et al, Trumpet Ensemble and Phillips et al, Membrane Percussion.

Chester Grade School vocal students also competed at the 2010 IGSMA Solo and Ensemble Contest. There were eight vocal solos and one vocal ensemble. Of the eight vocal solos, six earned 1st Place ratings and two earned 2nd Place ratings. There was also one vocal ensemble which earned a 1st Place rating.

First Place ratings included Destiny Kingery, "Castle on a Cloud"; Jade South, "Homeward Bound"; Heather Buckley, "Some Where Over The Rainbow"; Kennedy McCormick, "Let There Be Peace On Earth"; Jenna Wahl, "Amazing Grace" and Amber Carnahan, "Greensleeves".

Taylor McDaniel and Ashley Wegener earned 2nd Place ratings. Taylor sang, "Bless This House" while Ashley sang, "Someone To Watch Over Me".

Finally, there was one vocal ensemble by Destiny, et al, "Sisters", which earned a 1st Place rating.

Sue Colonel is the Director of Bands at Chester Grade School and Zeb Holder is the Vocal Music Director. Vicky Beers and Jane Kruse accompanied the students throughout the day.
