Upon arriving, Baldwin Police Chief Alan Young informed me that Deputy Kyle Colvis had the vehicle's driver in his vehicle. Chief Young also informed me that the crashed vehicle and a deceased subject were located in a ravine.
This ravine was located on the northwest side of the intersection of County Road 18 and Doza Creek Road.
Officer Hamilton observed the vehicle, a red 1997 Chevrolet Corvette, at the bottom of the ravine, approximately 20' deep. The vehicle was positioned facing in a southeasterly direction. The vehicle's rear window was broken out and the doors were closed.
Officer Hamilton also observed the deceased subject positioned on his back, on top of a rock and partially in small trees or brush, several feet to the west side of the vehicle.
Officer Hamilton then inspected the scene and observed a section of roadway on County Road 18 just west of the intersection of County Road 18 and Event Center Drive that had swales or dips in the roadway surface. At the easternmost side of this area, he located yaw marks crossing the westbound lane to the north edge of the roadway.
The vehicle had left the roadway, struck a ditch embankment, and then went airborne. The vehicle then struck a sign, breaking the post off approximately 3'-4' off the ground. Then the vehicle traveled through the grass and struck several small trees over the ravine and then fell approximately 20' into the bottom of the ravine, where it came to rest.
The scene was photographed by Deputy Coroner Carlos Barbour and Illinois State Police Trooper Meilink. Trooper Meilink reconstructed the crash scene, including recording all measurements and diagrams.
