BASEBALL: Day shuts out Z-R-C, Indians win 6-0
Du Quoin's Dalton Day tossed a complete game shutout and gave up just four hits as the Indians blanked Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher 6-0 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. Levi Brening contributed a two-run homer and three RBIs to help pace the offense for DHS.
Day walked two batters and struck out five to pick up the victory on the mound.
"Dalton Day was great on the mound today," said Indians head coach Tim Craft. "We have needed a pitching performance like that."
Du Quoin wasted no time getting a lead, sending three runs across in the top of the first inning. Ethan Keller singled, Jacob Valier reached on an error and A.J. Smith walked to load the bases for Brening, who delivered a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 edge. Brock Bullar (ground-out) and Braden Lee (double) followed with RBIs to make it 3-0.
The offense went quiet for the next five innings, but in the top of the seventh, Smith doubled home Valier and then scored on Brening's two-run blast to complete the scoring.
"We got off to a fast start with the bats again today," Craft said. "Then it was just like yesterday, we went into cruise control and got on our heels. It was good to see us score a few runs in the seventh to break it open."
Keller (2-4, R), Smith (1-2, 2 R, RBI, 2B, 2 BB), Brening (2-3, R, 3 RBI, HR, SAC), Lee (1-2, RBI, 2B, HBP) and Cole Hopkins (1-2, BB) had the hits for the Indians.
Du Quoin is at Carterville on Thursday for an SIRR Mississippi Division match-up.
