BASEBALL: Indians' early lead slips away at Nashville
Du Quoin let a 4-0 lead slip away at Nashville on Tuesday, allowing the Hornets to storm back for an 8-4 victory in SIRR Mississippi Division baseball action.
After plating four runs in the top of the first inning, the Indians' offense went ice cold and stranded all four base runners they had the rest of the way against Hornets starting pitcher Ryan Brink.
DHS handed their starter, Jacob Valier, a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on RBIs from A.J. Smith (single), Brock Bullar (single), Ryne O'Rourke (sacrifice fly) and Ashton Smith (double).
But the Indians would register only two hits in their final six at-bats and didn't get another runner past second base.
Valier made the lead hold up until the bottom of the third inning, when the Hornets racked up four runs on four hits and a walk to tie the game.
An error, a walk and a pair of base hits gave Nashville a 6-4 lead after four, and Daniel Thorson belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to tack on some insurance for the Hornets.
Valier (1-4, R), A.J. Smith (1-3, R, RBI, BB), Bullar (1-3, R, RBI, BB), Ashton Smith (1-3, RBI) and Braden Lee (1-3, HBP) had hits for Du Quoin.
The Indians (6-6, 1-2) are at Z-R-C on Wednesday and at Carterville on Thursday.
