BASKETBALL: Lady Falcons play well, but Murphysboro cruises

Though the final score would tell you it was never close, Elverado played perhaps their best ball game of the young season on Monday evening, but fell to high-powered Murphysboro 58-20 at the Lady Indians Tip-Off Classic in Du Quoin.

The Lady Falcons started the game on fire at 9-0, but the experienced - and unbeaten - Devils outscored EHS 30-4 the rest of the first half to seize command for good.

"I think this is the best we have played thus far in the tournament," said EHS coach Rasheeda Love. "Even though the score doesn't show that, I felt like if you saw it, you saw a different Elverado team here today in regards to their determination, their hustle, the pride that they took in doing the little things that we've talked about over the last couple days. I'm very happy with the way they played today, of course not with the outcome, but I can live with that as we continue to build on what we did here today."

"I give credit to Murphy, they're very well-coached, they're very talented. I think they can go very far with the group they've got over there."

Paige Newfarmer has seven points to lead the Lady Falcons, Cheyenne Abbadusky had six, Emma Bigham three, Hannah Alstat two, and Kylee Bedar and Brooke Whittington each had one.

Jasmine Frazier had 17 points for Murphysboro to lead all scorers. She was joined in double figures by Heather Cross (14) and Johnna Hines (10).

Elverado (0-4) meets Woodlawn at 5:30 on Tuesday at the Tip-Off, and Murphysboro can finish off a repeat championship of the event with a win over Johnston City at 7:00 p.m.
