Chester sweeps twin bill from Webber Township
Jason Schwartz went 5-for-6 with four runs scored, and Chester jumped out to an early lead in both games of a doubleheader sweep of Webber Township on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (4-4) scored seven runs in the first inning of the morning game en route to a 10-3 win, and scored three runs in the first inning of a 7-2 victory in the matinee.
"Extremely important," Blechle said on how important it was to get both games after being one-hit by Marissa-Coulterville in a 5-2 loss to the Meteors three days earlier. "Even going 1-1 in this situation, we would consider a success just because dropping that Marissa game, it kinda hurt the morale.
"I'm not taking anything away from Marissa, but it was a game - probably with as much talent as we have - we should win."
Chester's Luke Hartman went 3-for-6 with an RBI, and Jordan Berner went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs in the opener before a hamstring injury ended his day.
"It feels good to get back on a little bit of a winning streak like we did earlier in the week," Blechle said. "A full week of a lot of baseball games, to cap it this way, I'm satisfied, but still hungry."
It was a different story for Webber Township, which stranded 23 runners on the day - including 13 in the matinee. For its part, Chester committed a combined six errors."A little more effort," Webber Township coach Rick Hays said on what he was expecting out of his players. "We don't come out and look like we're ready to play and that's got to change if we're going to be a good ballclub.
"We've got to come out ready to play right off the bat, or we'll be down like we were (Saturday)."
The Trojans (1-4) left the bases loaded in the third and fifth innings of the second game, only getting one run - on a bases-loaded walk - out of their opportunities.
"If you're struggling hitting the ball, then you have to have someone step up and get some hits and drive some runs in and right now, we don't have anybody stepping up and doing that," Hays said.
Jason Schwartz got the win for Chester in the opener, allowing both runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts. Austin Carpenter evened his record to 1-1 on the season with a win in the matinee.
Carpenter allowed only one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts on four and a third innings of work.
Others with multiple hits on the day were Christian Mitchell (2-5, 2 RBIs) and Matt Smith (2-3 2 runs scored).
Chester 10, Webber 3
Chester scored seven runs in the first inning while sending 11 men to the plate to set the tone in the opener against Webber Township.
After the Trojans scratched a run across in the top of the third, the Yellow Jackets added three more in the bottom half of the inning.
Webber Township added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to account for the final score. The Trojans were held to a total of five hits off of three Chester pitchers - Jason Schwartz, Noah Franklin and Clay Herrell.
Chester 7, Webber 2
In the matinee, all of Chester's runs came in the first four innings, with Webber Township not getting its first run until the top of the fifth.
Singles by Jason Schwartz and Luke Hartman, sandwiched around a walk to Austin Welge, got Chester's first run, while a passed ball brought in the second.
Hartman scored on a 6-3 groundout by Mitchell for the Yellow Jackets' third run of the afternoon. Chester added single runs in the second and third innings before plating two more in the bottom of the fourth.
The Trojans' second run came in the top of the seventh.
