SOFTBALL: Elverado ousted at State by New Athens
Elverado's run in the SIJHSAA softball playoffs ended on Saturday morning in round one at the State Tournament, as New Athens came away with a 6-1 victory over the Lady Falcons, capitalizing on five Elverado errors that led to unearned runs.
The Lady Falcons jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning after Allie Whittington singled and scored on an RBI ground-out by Morgan Bernardini, but it would be their only lead of the day.
A hit and two errors led to two New Athens runs in the bottom of the second, then the Jr. Jackets would add another unearned run in the third before plating three in the fourth on an error and three hits.
Elverado had just five base runners in the game. Whittington (2-2, R, BB), Bernardini (1-3, RBI) and Chloe Barnes (1-3) each had hits for the Lady Falcons.
Whittington allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks and struck out eight New Athens batters.
The rest of Elverado's roster consists of Emma Funk, Morgan Cashion, Brianna Tuthill, Mallory Brooks, Zoe Maple, Skyler Dowdy, Cheradon Lively, Kaity Lewis, Emma Yates, Reese Funk, Sydney Schenk, Gracie Dowdy.
The Lady Falcons are coached by Alison Keith.
