VOLLEYBALL: DHS storms back for Senior Night win
The DuQuoin High School Varsity Volleyball Team may have played their best match of the season on Wednesday evening against the Herrin Tigers. The Tigers came to DuQuoin with an 18-13 record, but left town with a loss.
The Indians came to life in the second set of the match, and continued to battle the Tigers in the third set. The Indians were tenacious and refused to lose, coming back to tie the score time after time in the second and third sets and finally went on to win.
Herrin won the first set 25-16, but DuQuoin battled back in the second set to win 26-24. The final, and deciding set, went to DuQuoin 25-19. DuQuoin took the match at 2-1. DuQuoin's record is now 7-18 overall, and the Indians finished the Conference at 1-9.
DuQuoin's Rebekah Maddox had 15 kills in the match, 4 blocks, and 3 service aces. Cassidy Rice had 4 kills, and 5 digs. Hailey Stewart had 19 assists as well as a service ace. Hope Fenton had 4 kills and 3 blocks. Kate Toler had 3 kills, a service ace, 4 digs, and 2 blocks. Alexis Kohrs (Libero) had 11 digs. Jessie Martin had a kill, 2 digs, a service ace, and a block. Bailie Caldwell had 3 digs.
It was a special win for the Indians as it was Senior Night. There were four Indians playing in their final home game. Alexis Kohrs is the daughter of Laura Kohrs. Jessica Martin is the daughter of Chris and Amy Martin. Cassidy Rice is the daughter of Charles (Beaver) and Judy Rice. Rebekah Maddox is the daughter of Don and Anna Maddox. Teammates Jordyn Bullar, Hailey Stewart, Bailie Caldwell, and Lela Spiller-Copeland honored each of the Seniors with memories of their volleyball careers. The tributes from the four Indians were very emotional and touching.
Coach Jesica Green was ecstatic after the game. Green commented: "I am very, very proud of the girls. They came out and fought hard for this one. This is the best match yet."
"Maddox played her best game yet. We moved Rice to the outside, and she played a great game. Fenton came out, and did a great job blocking. Stewart did a very good job on assists. She is running a 5-1, and did a phenomenal job."
"We played amazing! I am so proud of the team tonight. Hopefully, we can bring this win to the game tomorrow and to the regional on Tuesday."

The Junior Varsity match was taken by Herrin 2-0. Herrin took the first set at 26-24 and the second 25-14. The JV record is 4-9. The DuQuoin Freshmen lost 2-1. The score of the first set was 25-16 with DuQuoin winning. Herrin won the second set 28-26, and the third set went to Herrin 15-9. The Freshmen record is
4-19.
DuQuoin travels to Steeleville on Thursday for the final game of the regular season. DuQuoin starts Regional play on Tuesday against Pinckneyville at the Christopher Regional. Game time is 7:00. Pinckneyville and DuQuoin split during the regular season, both winning at home.
