BASEBALL: Six-run second inning sparks DMS
DU QUOIN, IL - Sparta Middle School (Lincoln) went up 3-0 over the DuQuoin Middle School baseball team on Tuesday, but DMS came alive in the bottom of the second inning to score six runs. Sparta only scored those three runs in the game, and the Warriors scored seven more runs to win 13-3 in six innings. Winners of their last eight games, DuQuoin's record is now 9-2.
The starting and winning pitcher for DuQuoin was Hank Stewart. Stewart went three innings allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, had 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Stewart's record is 4-0 for the Warriors. Ashton Smith relieved in the fourth inning. Smith went three innings allowing no runs, no hits, had 4 walks, and two strikeouts.
Stewart was 1-4 at the plate. Caleb Vogel was 2-4 with an RBI, Tevin Lee was 2-3 with an RBI, Smith was 1-4, Braden Heape was 1-3, Luke Metten was 1-2 with an RBI, and Logan Morgan was 1-3. Others in the game were Braden Lee, Klayton Donoghue, Anthony Spiller, Blaine Bradley, and Josh Heape.
Coach Tim Craft has these comments after the game: "I don't think we were entirely ready to play at the start of the game. Once we started getting runners on base, we came to life. We did not hit really well. We did a really good job of running the bases, and taking advantage of their mistakes."
DuQuoin is at home on Thursday with Murphysboro.
