CCHS juniors headed to National History Day
Carbondale Community High School has announced that two juniors, Elise Nguyen and Hannah Thomas, have qualified for the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C.
Elise and Hannah competed at the Illinois History Fair on April 27 in Springfield, where their performance, “The Women’s Army Corps: Opening the Door,” earned a superior rating and secured their advancement to the national competition, which will be held in Washington, D.C. this June.
CCHS AP U.S. History teacher, CJ Buss, who guided students throughout the research and project development process, shared the following:
“National History Day provides students with a unique opportunity to learn crucial research skills and source literacy while also learning more about a topic that they are personally interested in. Our school has been fortunate to have so much success in History Fair, but that speaks to the passion and work ethic of our students. In the case of Elyse and Hannah, they were able to bring history alive through their presentation of “The Women's Army Corps: Opening the Door.” This topic had particular interest to the group because Hannah's great-grandmother was a member of the WAC. Without history fair, she may not have had the opportunity to learn about her family's role in history.”
