WRESTLING: Panthers pick up three wins at EAWR Super Duals
Pinckneyville's varsity wrestlers picked up three team wins out of four matches at last weekend's East Alton-Wood River Super Duals, as the Panthers beat Carrollton, EAWR, and Carlyle, and fell just three points shy of Bethalto (Civic Memorial) in their lone defeat.
Gabe Stroehlein (170 lbs.) was PCHS's top performer of the day, picking up wins in all four matches, two by pin, two by forfeit. Garrett Williams (126 lbs.), Tyler Eggemeyer (138/145 lbs.), Sid Sronce (152/160 lbs.) and Hayden Swain (220/285 lbs.) each had three wins for the Panthers.
In their 42-12 win over Carrollton, Pinckneyville got pinfall victories from Williams (126 lbs.) and Eggemeyer (145 lbs.), and forfeit wins from Sronce (152 lbs.), Stroehlein (170 lbs.), Faleshia Quillman (138 lbs.), Austin Kreger (160 lbs.) and Josh Zepeda (182 lbs.).
Against Bethalto (CM), a slim 39-36 loss for the Panthers, Grant Murphy (152 lbs.) and Stroehlein (170 lbs.) pinned their opponents, and Zepeda (182 lbs.), Swain (285 lbs.), Jordan Koester (120 lbs.) and Ryan Rury (220 lbs.) picked up forfeits.
Pinckneyville then knocked off East Alton-Wood River 46-36. Koester (120 lbs.), Williams (126 lbs.), Eggemeyer (138 lbs.) and Stroehlein (170 lbs.) each got the pin, and Richard Jones (182 lbs.) won by decision. Sronce (160 lbs.), Swain (220 lbs.) and Quinin Baker (195 lbs.) won by forfeit.
The Panthers finished off the day by crushing Carlyle 48-16. Murphy (152 lbs.) got the only pinfall win for PCHS in that match, with Quillman (145 lbs.) and Eggemeyer (138 lbs.) winning by decision. Williams (126 lbs.), Sronce (160 lbs.), Stroehlein (170 lbs.), Jones (182 lbs.), Baker (195 lbs.) and Swain (220 lbs.) each took victories via forfeit.
The Panthers will travel to Rochester for a tournament on January 24.
