Mike Kimmel was the greeter at the Wednesday, Oct. 9 meeting. We started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Cindy Buys. Faith Miller shared a moment of reflection, and Gil Kroening announced there were no guests in attendance. Club and member announcements:
World Polio Day: Ella Lacey updated the club on the events planned for United Nations Day and World Polio Day Oct 24. Events will be held at the SIU Student Center, Old Main Room, starting around lunch and continuing into the afternoon, with Dr. Lacey presenting on behalf of Rotary around 3 or 3:30 p.m.
District Grant Project, Center for Empowerment and Justice, phase one: The computer has arrived, and setup occurred immediately after the meeting. Photos of the install can bee seen at our Facebook page.
Saluki Rotaract update: Our student recruitment event, held Monday, Oct. 7 at Morris Library, drew one participant. We will continue to engage students to hopefully keep the Rotaract club going.
Schedule update: There will be no meeting for Oct. 23.
District news: The District Conference will be held Nov. 1 and 2 at the DoubleTree Inn in Mt. Vernon.
Lots of good news to share this week. Jeff Grubbs noted that Will Travelstead appeared in public with the St. Louis Cardinals hat, so that was good news. Ella Lacey invited her fellow Rotarians to attend the I Can Read of Southern Illinois fundraiser event at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Carbondale Elks Club. Tickets are on sale no for the event. Carl Flowers shared the news of his great golf outing at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
Our guest speaker was Mr. Cary Minnis, executive director of the Greater Egyptian Regional Planning and Development Commission. Minnis covered how the Planning and Development Commission is involved in local area economic development projects, transportation planning projects, environmental planning projects and other various local services. He went into detail on local projects at the SI Airport, how the commission assisted in areas prone to flooding along Reed Station Road and a multitude of other projects. More information can be found at greateregypt.org.
The meeting ended with Ella Lacey leading us in the Four Way Test.
