Firefighters called to extinguish trash can fire

A Tuesday afternoon fire call at 642 State St. was caused by a smoldering trash can, according to Chester Fire Chief Marty Bert.

“(The residents) had dumped some cigarette butts they were done with into the trash can,” Bert said. “When they came home they had light smoke in the house.”

Bert said the trash can was the only area in the house affected and that the residents had arrived home, opened the door and discovered the smoke.

Firefighters, who were paged out at 1:42 p.m. on the report of smoke coming from a residence, addressed the problem quickly and were back in service at 2:20 p.m.
