Logan baseball sweeps Lincoln Trail
CARTERVILLE - The John A. Logan College baseball used dominant pitching and timely hitting to sweep Lincoln Trail, 3-0 and 6-0, on Thursday.
The two wins put the Vols at 13-9 on the year and 3-2 in GRAC play and stopped a five-game losing streak.
In game one, Trey Riley (3-1) threw a complete game while striking out 13.
The scoring opened in the sixth for the Vols when Collin Clayton hit a two-out RBI double to score Jeremy Gaines and give Logan a 1-0 lead.
JALC pulled away in the eighth when Reid Pope pinch hit and connected for a two-run home run to center. Clayton led the offense going 2-for-4 at the plate.
In game two, Logan's starter Brenden Heiss (3-0) threw six strong innings, scattering three hits while striking out 13. Freshman Andrew Zenner got the final three outs with one strikeout.
The Vols used a big four-run fourth inning to take control of the game, highlighted by an RBI double from Jack Wilson. Logan finished the scoring in the sixth with two more runs to push the lead to 6-0
The Vols were led offensively by the three-headed attack of Sam Frontino, Jack Wilson, and Hunter Combs, who all collected two hits each. Gaines and Clayton picked up the other two hits of the game.
"Our pitching dominated the day from beginning to end," JALC head coach Kyle Surprenant said. "Trey (Riley) did an outstanding job commanding the zone. Hunter Combs did a great job controlling the running game from behind the plate and you pair that with a key double play late in the game allowed Riley to keep his pitch count down and go the distance.
"Heiss and Zenner did a great job in game two. Anytime you get 27 strikeouts from your pitchers in a doubleheader you know you are going to have an opportunity to sweep. Offensively, Collin Clayton continued to swing it well for us along with Reid Pope and Sam Frontino making the most of their opportunities today and playing a big pat of our offense.
"As we move forward we are going to need guys to continue to step up when they get called on and I'm confident they will continue to do so."
