Liberty Church: Lon McPherson Back as Pastor of Church His Family Founded
In August 1989 members of the Lon McPherson family founded a storefront church called Liberty Church in downtown Du Quoin across the street from McPherson Pharmacy that he owned and which served the community well.
The chemistry of pharmacy and faith worked well for his family and for Du Quoin.
The family is one of Du Quoin's success stories.
Since 1989 the church has grown and in recent years the congregation was able to build a new Liberty Church on West Main Street across from Bethel Lutheran Church. The church is home to high quality initiatives like the "Remember Me" memorial service during the Christmas season and the "Blessing of the Backpacks" program before the start of school.
It's congregation has grown to 200 members and it is fitting that he return as pastor.
McPherson has answered the call when and where needed over the years. He served as a vacancy pastor for the Presbyterian Church for several months and while wintering in Florida, taught Bible classes there.
He returns to this pastorate anxious to serve again. Services at Liberty Church include Sunday School at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m. with Bible study and a youth service on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.
