The smoke was so thick and black that firemen had to crawl on their hands and knees below the heat and smoke from the fire to find their fire trucks.
The homeowner of the property where the fire began, Clint Schubert, was taken to Pinckneyille Community Hospital with a hand injury.
Tamaroa Fire Chief Richard Valentine and firefighter Nick Terry were transported by Pinckneyville Ambulance Service to Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin for heat exhaustion.
The fire was so large it dropped ash on the city of Du Quoin and you could smell the smoke for miles around. The fire was driven by a breeze out of the north and was stopped just south of Park Road.
Firemen believe the fire spread from an accident involving Mr. Schubert using propane gas and a stove in a building outside his home.
Firemen from Tamaroa, Nashville, Sesser, Pinckneyville and Du Quoin responded. Firemen were on scene until 10 p.m. Friday night.
