Du Quoin Garden Club Plant sale is April 30 at Du Quoin Plaza

The March meeting of the Du Quoin Garden Club was hosted at the Du Quoin Public Library by Library Executive Director Kristina Benson.

Eighteen members were in attendance for the regular monthly meeting, welcoming two new members, Gene Krone and Linda Karraker.

The 55th Plant Sale was confirmed for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 30 at the Du Quoin Plaza parking lot - or until all the plants are sold. Homegrown perennials and an assortment of colorful annuals will be available during the sale.

Other matters of business discussed during the meeting included preparing the community gardens for spring planting, membership updates, yearbook updates to the printer, approval of a new Garden Club logo for T-shirts and a $100 donation to the Du Quoin Youth Club.

A new attraction will be added to the south Hosta Garden at Keyes City Park - a whimsical, caterpillar sculpture filled with assorted succulents will be installed on Earth Day 2022 for the enjoyment of our community to enjoy during the growing season.

Mistress of Ceremonies Mary Jo Novak conducted the installation of officers for the 2022-2023 year. A book theme was instrumental in the installation of Treasurer Peg Pursell, Secretary Jane Barwick, Vice President Pam Swallers and President Jean Bullock.

Linda Searby shared an interesting Horticulture Minute on potholes and pansies and the results. "New Plant Varieties for 2022" was the program for the evening presented by member Bonnie Wilson. She shared her experiences, as did several members, of growing new varieties in their gardens last year, including a list of suggested new varieties for members to experiment with in their gardens this growing season.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 at the home of Jane Barwick. A members' wildflower walk, also hosted by Jane Barwick, will be scheduled at Six Mile Creek as soon as the Blue Bells begin to bloom.

Eleven members attended the District VII Annual Spring meeting, hosted by Garden Gate Club of Benton at the Café Bloom on the Square.

Eighty District VII members were registered for the one-day event with special guest Marilyn Krueger, president of Garden Clubs of Illinois, in attendance.
