The September Garden of the Month is simply lovely. Mickey and Carletta Hanks have lived at 1000 W. Boulevard in Marion for the past 12 years, transforming their yard into a gardener's paradise.
Many of their large variety of plants came from friends and relatives, with one large yucca plant coming from Carletta's home place in Eastern Kentucky. There are heavenly bamboo, periwinkles, hostas, elephant ears, peonies, rudbeckia, day lilies, hydrangeas, knockout roses, clematis, potentilla, irises, forsythia, wisteria, mums, sedum, geraniums, roses, hydrangeas, bee balm, lamb's ear, and so much more.
Along with all the many plants, there are playful decorative accents throughout the garden, along with several bird houses.
As is often the case, Mickey gives all the credit for this beautiful garden to Carletta and Carletta gives credit to Mickey for all his help. One very special feature of the garden is that Mickey has taken bushes like crape myrtles and lilacs and transformed them into trees by judicious pruning and shaping. Everywhere that one looks there is something delightful to see in this garden -- making it truly an outstanding September Garden of the Month.
The Marion Garden Club features a local garden each month of the summer and fall season. Suggestions can be left on the website, at mariongardenclubofillinois.weebly.com.
The Club is part of the District VII of Garden Clubs of Illinois and National Garden Club.
