New theater to open at the mall

Just weeks after a major anchor store announced it would be closing its doors at Carbondale's University Mall, the mall has struck back with a pair of announcements.

In a release earlier this week, mall management says the family-owned VIP Cinemas will take over operations at the abandoned mall movie theater formerly operated by AMC. Also, management teased an announcement in the near future about a future tenant at the storefront for Macy's, which announced in January that it would close its Carbondale location this spring.

Debra Tindall, University Mall's general manager, said the new theater operation should be open this spring.

"VIP Cinemas is not only bringing the movie-going experience back to University Mall, they are offering a quality experience with an exceptional value that we know our patrons and the southern Illinois community will appreciate," Tindall said. "Namdar Realty has other leasing opportunities they are working on for new tenants at University Mall. Additionally, Namdar Realty will be making an announcement in the near future regarding plans for the anchor space currently occupied by Macy's."

The theater will offer shows daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Daily shows before noon will include a free small popcorn with admission for just $5.49.

"In addition to offering a better value for customers, VIP Cinemas is pleased to bring an expanded show schedule and new, luxury seating in eight theaters at University Mall," said Jake McSparin, vice president for VIP Cinemas.
